The Rush to Vaccinate Children

There is a rush to vaccinate all children ages 5-11 against this coronavirus (SARS-COV2) that is going around. I find this to be utterly ridiculous, as young children at extremely low risk of hospitalization and death from this virus. We have known for nearly two years that the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, including obesity, are at highest risk of hospitalization and death, and study after study bears that out. A young healthy child is very low risk of hospitalization or death from a SARS-COV2 infection, so there’s very little justification to vaccinating children. Other countries aren’t doing what the United States is doing. In fact, here’s what the Dutch government says about vaccinating children 5-11:

There are certainly not rushing to vaccinate every 5-11 year old child. In fact, many of these children do not need to be vaccinated because they have been previously infected. There’s really no reason to go be vaccinated if you have been previously infected unless you fall into a high risk category (elderly, compromised immune system, obesity). Sweden has recommended against vaccinating those 5-11 years old saying the benefits don’t outweigh the risks, and I agree.

The British government is not vaccinating every single 5-11 year old. They are only vaccinating the children in that age group who are the most vulnerable, which means most of the children in Britain who are 5-11 years old are not being vaccinated.

Here in the United States, we need to follow the lead of other countries and not rush to vaccinate every single person. The vast majority of Americans have been vaccinated, infected, or both. We need to focus our vaccination efforts on those who are at highest risk who have not been vaccinated or infected. That’s where our focus should be. All these vaccine mandates, whether implemented by states, hospitals, or companies, need to be dropped immediately, and let those who want to be vaccinated get vaccinated, and let those who don’t want to get vaccinated not get vaccinated without the threat of losing their jobs. This also goes for universities who are requiring students be vaccinated and have a booster. It’s time for some common sense when it comes to the vaccine mandates. I’m pro-vaccine, but anti-mandate when it comes to these vaccinations.
